Jasper County will be well represented at Wednesday’s Vietnam Veterans Recognition Day ceremony at the Vietnam Memorial on the south State Capitol grounds. Jasper County Treasurer and veterans advocate Doug Bishop says the Jasper County Veterans Affairs Commission is paying for two buses that will take local vietnam veterans and their supporters to the 11 a.m. ceremony May 14th.
“There is going to be right at one hundred of us going up on the buses, and then we have another 8 to 10 that are going up in their own vehicles. So there will be well over 100 Jasper County veterans and supporters up there just for that ceremony.”
Bishop says six Jasper County residents lost their lives in the Vietnam War, and Wednesday will mark the 12th year that a group from Jasper County has attended the Vietnam Veterans Recognition Day ceremony. He adds all seats on both buses have been spoken for. The buses will leave Newton American Legion Post 111 on West 4th Street South in Newton at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.
