Newton Boys And Girls Track And Field Teams Win Cardinal Relays

The Newton boys and girls track and field teams defended their home stadium Friday against six other schools, and won the Cardinal Relays. The Cardinal boys scored 217 points, for a 90 point win, while the Newton girls were 100 points better than their closest competition with a score of 211.

The Cardinal boys took first place in nine individual events and three relays. Nick Milburn won the shot put (56’-03.5”) and the discus (154’-09”), Caden Klein took first in the 100m dash (11.06) and the 200m dash (22.27), Reilly Trease won the 110m hurdles (14.91), Dawson Maki won the 400m dash (53.12), Cade Bauer won the 400m hurdles (58.14), Lance Zaabel won the 3200m run (10:27.30), and Isaiah Hansen won the high jump (6’-02”). The Newton boys added first place finishes from the 4x100m relay team (42.56), the 4x400m relay team (3:34.22), and the 4x800m relay team (9:10.50).

The Newton girls were first in four relays, and got five individual wins. Macy Lampe won the 100m hurdles (15.91), Lauren Clarke won the 200m dash (25.81), Bella Winther won the 800m run (2:27.20), Addie Hammerly took first in the discus (92’-06”), and Tori White won the high jump (5’-00). The girls added first place finishes from the 4x100m relay team (56.87), the 4x200m relay team (1:53.50), the shuttle hurdle relay team(1:07.41), and the 4x400m relay team (4:22.17).

Newton Boys Tennis Team Splits Home Triangular With Saydel And Ballard

The Newton Boys tennis team went 1-1 in a home triangular on Friday. The Cardinals opened the event with a 6-3 win over Saydel, before falling to Ballard 8-1. 

The Cardinals won five of the six single matches against Saydel as Ethan Valtman (6-2, 6-3), Evan Marshall (6-2, 6-1), Ezra Bartell (6-0, 6-2), and Damien Smith (6-0, 6-2) defeated their opponents in straight sets. Kaden Marshall (6-2, 1-6, 10-4) added the fifth singles victory in three sets. The only doubles match win against Saydel was a two set victory by Valtman and Marshall (6-1, 6-2).

Against Ballard, Valtman won his third match of the day, winning in singles 10-5. Valtman and Gentry Swarts lost their doubles match 9-11, as did Damien Smith and Ezra Bartell. Garrett Crandall and Noah Tremmel fell to their opponents 8-10.

The Newton boys tennis team is now 4-7 in head to head competition, and they will next compete in district play on Wednesday in Boone.
