Tulip bulbs in the City of Pella will be available for removal starting Monday. 

The annual dig takes after 7:00 a.m. tomorrow at the following locations:

  • Beds located between the sidewalk and street on South Main Street (from Peace to Liberty), North Main Street (from Washington to Sunken Gardens Park), Washington Street (from the Open Bible Church west to Brinkhoff Park), and Franklin Street (from the Post Office west to West Market Park)
  • City parks: Brinkhoff, Central, South, Sunken Gardens, West Market
  • City facilities: City Hall, Community Center, Library, Klokkenspel
  • Fair Haven Memorial at the intersection of Union Street & E 3rd Street

 

Please follow these guidelines when digging tulip bulbs:
– Use a pitchfork/potato fork
– Leave foliage attached to bulbs (take leaves/stem & bulb)
– Remove only tulip bulbs, no other plants
– Soil must remain in the flower beds
– Abide by all on-site signage

Pella Historical Museums is hosting “Pillage the Village” at the same time. Dig times at the Pella Historical Village are:

-Museum Members Only: Monday, May 12
-Open to the Public: Tuesday, May 13 – Saturday, May 17
-10am-5pm weekdays; 10am-4pm Saturday
-At the Pella Historical Village

​Dig tulip bulbs to take home and plant in the fall. Pillage the Village will first be open to museum members, then to the public. Please note the following information:
– Enter through the Gift Shop on East 1st Street! Members, we will check your membership card on May 12. You will exit through the gate on the alley that goes to our small parking lot.
– Participants must bring their own pitchfork, potato fork, or whatever digging tool they prefer. as well as boxes/bags/etc. to carrybulbs home.
– Only dig tulips from beds in the Historical Village. Do not dig other plants, clumps of tulips (only the ones in beds), or in Scholte Gardens. (Pella Historical has sprinkler lines that could be damaged over at Scholte. Gardeners will dig bulbs and leave them on the curb to be picked up.)
– Please leave foliage attached to the bulb – take the leaves and step along with the bulb.

Pella Historical Museums plants nearly 100,000 tulip bulbs each fall. Each bulb costs between 40 cents and 72 cents. Participants are asked to consider making a donation, perhaps $1 per two bulbs.
