The City of Newton is spending $56,800 to restock the Public Works salt storage building for the winter. Newton City Administrator Matt Muckler says the City puts out bids for salt through the Central Iowa Salt Group, which consists of Newton and most of the cities and counties around the Des Moines metropolitan area. According to Muckler, the group gets better bids by purchasing a large amount of salt. Newton is getting 800 tons, at the group price of $71.00 per ton. Hutchinson Salt Company of Hutchinson, Kansas was the low bidder, and will deliver the salt to Newton after July 1st, but before the winter season.
