minipitch

A ribbon cutting ceremony will be held tomorrow afternoon at the newest addition to Newton’s Parks and Recreation Department. Thanks to the Brett Lundberg family, there’s a soccer mini-pitch in Newton’s Maytag Park. Brett Lundberg is an assistant Newton High School boys soccer coach who, along with his family and other supporters, pushed to get the mini-pitch facility built. They established a partnership with Kick It Forward, a Des Moines based non-profit that strives to use soccer as a way to help young people achieve success despite financial barriers.

The Newton City Council voted unanimously to proceed with the mini-pitch project in May of last year, after supporters announced they had already raised  $115,000 out of their $156,000 goal in three months. Newton Parks Operation Superintendent Nick Cummins says the soccer mini-pitch field has been open for a while, and is being used.

“ I can see kids using that daily and about every evening.”

The City of Newton, the Lundberg family, and the Greater Newton Area Chamber of Commerce will cut the ribbon on the Lundberg Family Soccer Mini-Pitch at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday afternoon.
