Girls Golf claims LHC crown
The Norwalk girls golf team completed a three-meet sweep of this year’s Little Hawkeye Conference tournament series, clinching their first conference championship with a first-place finish at Oskaloosa’s Edmundson Golf Course. The Warriors shot a team score of 340, holding off Indianola by six strokes. Pella placed third with a 354. Individual Norwalk scores included Evelyn Kinney’s round of 82, Lydia Krueger with an 85, Ava Garvey 86 and Addie Smith 87.
Combined with their conference meet wins at Grimes and Newton, the Warrior girls won the LHC title with a perfect score of 18. Indianola and Pella placed second and third, respectively. Norwalk is the first Little Hawkeye team to have all six golfers earn all-conference honors by finishing in the top 12 of the three-meet composite standings. Krueger placed second overall, followed by Garvey in fourth, Kinney fifth, Smith seventh, Allie Soukup 10th and Mariola Torro Abad tied for 12th. Norwalk also won all three JV conference meets this season.
Head coach Steve Wermerskirchen tells KNIA Sports that he is very proud of the team, and called it a rare feat to have six players on the all-conference list. “In sports, athletes can do all the right things to prepare to be successful,” he said. “These six individuals all wanted to be all-conference. They worked so hard, sacrificed so much. I’ve never seen a group of golfers battle in each round. It’s a very special group.”
Norwalk will close out the regular season at Thursday’s Cedar Rapids Prairie Invite.
