Two people were injured when three vehicles collided in the westbound lanes of Highway 163 west of Pella on Tuesday.
The Iowa State Patrol reports a Lincoln Navigator driven by 66-year-old Betty Maples of Pleasantville was slowing down to take a left turn near 198th Avenue at 4:05 p.m., when a Volkswagen Jetta driven by 21-year-old Breyton Schwenker of Newton failed to slow down also traveling west.
The front car was rear-ended and turned over, striking a Pella Community School District school bus carrying the Pella High School girls soccer team.
Two people were injured, and both were listed as passengers. They’ve been identified as 65-year-old Rickey Maples of Knoxville and 24-year-old Dante Dobbins of Pleasantville. Maples was flown by helicopter to Des Moines Methodist, while Dobbins was transported via Pella Ambulance to Pella Regional Health Center.
No members of the Pella High School soccer team or the bus driver were physically harmed in the collision. Their scheduled game against Newton has been postponed.
The Pella Fire Department, Pella Police Department, and Marion County Sheriff’s Office also assisted with the scene.
