A Knoxville man has won a $50,000 Powerball Double Play prize when he was buying a Mother’s Day card.

The prize was won by 61-year-old Mark Swanson, who purchased the ticket at the Knoxville Wal-Mart.

“I went out to Walmart to get my daughter-in-law a Mother’s Day card and walked by the (lottery) kiosk there and decided to stop to buy a Powerball ticket,” Swanson said. “I ended up getting the Double Play and it worked out really well.”

Swanson matched four of five black drawing numbers and the Powerball in Saturday’s Double Play drawing, and was just one number away from winning the game’s top prize of $10 million. Swanson, the detail manager for a car dealership, said he already has plans for his winnings.

“I’m going to probably pay off my truck and a few other bills and just keep working,” he said. “That helps out a bunch.”

Powerball began in April 1992 in 15 states, with jackpots that started at a guaranteed $2 million.
