
The Newton boys golf team advanced to the District Meet on Wednesday, while Cardinals boys tennis player Ethan Valtman qualified for the Individual State Tennis Tournament.
The Newton boys golf team earned the District spot by placing third at the Class 3A Sectional in Knoxville Wednesday, with a combined score of 329. Jackson Price turned in the best score for Newton, tying for 5th with a 77, but placed 6th based on the cardback tiebreaker. Three Cardinals finished 16th through 18th as Mason Smith shot an 83, Lincoln Peterson had an 84, and Peyton Rozendaal recorded an 85. Carter Forst finished 28th with an 88, and Lane Rozendaal shot a 91 for 34th.
At the Class 1A District Individual Tennis Tournament in Boone, Ethan Valtman was runner-up in the singles bracket. Valtman was the second seed and won his first three matches in straight sets 6-0, 6-0;6-3, 6-3; and 6-0, 6-0. In the Championship match, Ethan fell to top seeded Easton Moon of North Polk. Valtman, who qualified for state by making the Championship match, lost the first set 6-0 and was trailing in the second set 3-0, before stopping the match with an injury. Ethan will represent Newton at the State Boys Tennis Championships May 27th and 28th. Evan Marshall won his first singles match 6-0, 6-3, but lost a three set match in the quarterfinals 5-7, 6-0, 0-1. In doubles, Newton’s Ethan Freese and Kaden Marshall were seeded second and made it to the semifinals, winning their first two matches in straight sets 6-0, 6-0 and 6-3, 6-3, but lost their last two matches to finish in fourth place. The Cardinals other doubles team of Ezra Bartell and Damien Smith lost their first match 6-4, 6-1.
The Newton boys golf team will travel to Waverly Monday for District play, while the Cardinals boys tennis team returns to action on Saturday for the Class 1A Team Substate Tournament.
