The Norwalk boys tennis team competed against a tough field at Wednesday’s Class 2A District Singles and Doubles Meet in Ames.

All four Warrior entries won their first round match, then lost in the quarterfinals. Eli Mills won a third-set tiebreaker in singles while Lane Juergens picked up a 6-3-6-3 victory. The all-senior doubles teams won easily in the first round. Braylon Stockwell and Tyler Stiegelmeier did not drop a game in their 6-0, 6-0 win. Drew Lents and Corbin Oswald prevailed 6-1, 6-1.

Waukee Northwest claimed the champion and runner-up state qualifier spots in both brackets.

The Norwalk boys will now turn their attention to Class 2A Team Substate competition. On Saturday morning in Ames, the 10-5 Warriors will face 1-14 Waterloo East at 9:00 a.m. The winner takes on Ames at noon.

Warrior track teams at 4A State Qualifier

The Norwalk track and field teams venture to Mason City for today’s Class 4A Coed State Qualifying Meet at 4:00 p.m. A talented eight-team field also includes Ames, Cedar Falls, Fort Dodge, Indianola, Mason City, Waterloo East and Waterloo West. The top two place-winners in each event qualify automatically for next week’s State Meet in Des Moines. In addition, 12 at-large performances from across the state will advance in each event.

The Norwalk boys are expected to take a slew of events to the state meet. According to gobound.com, the Warriors rank first or second in their district in 11 events and third or fourth in four others. Kaiden Kunze boasts the top 200-meter dash time of 21.76 and the top long jump mark of 23 feet, 10.25 inches. Norwalk also ranks first in District 4 in the sprint medley and distance medley relays. Senior Tony Anania ranks second in the district in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200. Other events ranking second include Daniel Roche in the 400 dash, Logan Atherton in the high jump, and the 4×800 and 4×400 relays.

Freshman Elle Hatlevig has the top performance for the Norwalk girls, ranking second in the high jump with a best of five feet, four inches. Ella Johnson ranks third in the 100-meter dash in 12.78 seconds and the Warriors rank fourth or fifth in District 4 in all seven relays.
