Jasper County Conservation is hosting two events Saturday. One is a native plant sale from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Conservation Department’s office, while the other is a fishing tournament at Mariposa County Park.

For the plant sale, Conservation Department Naturalist Greg Oldsen says they started growing seedlings for projects throughout the County’s parks system and thought it would be a good idea to get some into the hands of the public as well.

“It’s a good way to plug those into your landscaping at home and hopefully support the pollinators we have here in central Iowa”

Oldsen says they have twenty species available. Most are native prairie, but there are a couple of woodland species as well. The Jasper County Conservation Department office is located at 1030 West Second Street South in Newton.

Oldsen says Saturday’s 5:30 a.m. fishing tournament is the second of the season for the Jasper County Youth Fishing Club. He expects around two dozen kids to participate.

“20 to 30 kids come out. Our monthly meetings are about the same, but we have over 50 kids in the club.”

Oldsen says the fishing club is open to any youth in third grade through high school. Contact the Jasper County Conservation Department for any additional information about the Fishing Club or tomorrow’s plant sale.
