Newton Girls Tennis Season Ends In Class 1A Regional  At North Polk

The Newton girls tennis team lost five of six matches in a Class 1A Region four match-up with North Polk in Alleman on Friday, ending their season. The only win for the Cardinal girls was a three set victory in #1 Singles by Paige Benson. Benson lost the first set 2-6, before winning set two 6-4 and taking the third set tiebreaker 10-8. Alexis Dirksen lost her #2 Singles match 6-2, 6-2. Newton also suffered two set losses in the #3 and #6 Singles matches with Brooklyn Sterling losing 6-3, 6-1 and Emersyn Gross 6-4, 6-0. The Cardinals #4 and #5 Singles players forced third set tiebreakers. Morgan Frehse lost her match 6-3, 2-6, 10-6, while Sloan Broderson lost her tiebreaker 10-3 following sets of 6-3 and 6-7 (3-7). 

The 2025 Newton girls tennis team went 4-7 in head to head competition, and placed 5th in the Little Hawkeye Conference. 

Newton Boys Soccer Team Falls In Regular Season Finale at Fort Madison

The Newton boys soccer team traveled to Fort Madison Friday and suffered their eighth shut-out in seventeen games. Fort Madison scored five goals in the first 40 minutes and added two more in the second half for a 7-0 win. The Cardinals have scored 15 goals this season and given up 48. But going into the match at Fort Madison, senior goalkeeper Javin Dolan had the Little Hawkeye Conference’s highest save percentage at 82.2%. He also had 185 saves, 59 more than any other goalkeeper in the conference.

The Cardinal boys soccer team is now 5-10-2, and will play a Class 3A Substate game at home against Winterset Monday.
