Newton’s newest park is set for a ribbon-cutting two weeks from today. The event, at what’s called Harmony Park, is to celebrate the opening of the splash pad at the downtown park. Newton Parks Operations Superintendent, Nick Cummins, notes this has been a joint project involving private fundraising and the City leading the design and providing the city lot.
“It’s been a long process with a lot of people involved. Especially Erin Yeager with Newton Main Street and the private fundraising, and then the partnership between that group and the City. Just to finally see it come together is great!”
In 2020, a group of private citizens in Newton proposed a splash pad be built in the vacant city lot at the corner of West 3rd Street North and North 3rd Avenue West. Newton Main Street then agreed to raise $400,000 to make the park a reality. The park and splash pad between Newton’s downtown and Legacy Plaza will be open for the first time this summer. The ribbon-cutting hosted by the City of Newton, Newton Main Street, and the Greater Newton Area Chamber of Commerce, is set for noon Friday, June 6th.
