The Newton girls soccer team is advancing to a Class 2A Semifinal after a home win Friday, while the Newton baseball team lost a match-up with Bondurant-Farrar in a game that was broadcast on kniakrls.com KRLS3.

The Cardinal girls defeated Ballard 3-0, with all three goals in the first half. Sophia Coady scored the first two, while Aliviah Ross added the third. Coady’s first goal was off an assist from Ross, while her second was a corner kick that went off the Ballard goalie’s hands. The final goal of the game by Ross was assisted by Kaylee Guthrie. Newton had 15 shots on goal, while Cardinal goalie Addyson Cibula made six saves in the shut out. Newton head coach Susan Altemeier says communication, hustle, and formation were all factors in the team’s win.  

The Cardinal girls soccer team will attempt to advance to the Class 2A Region 3 final at #12 in 2A Pella Wednesday. 

The Newton baseball team lost a 7-0 lead at home in the top of the sixth inning Friday, and gave up the winning run to Bondurant-Farrar in the top of the seventh. The 8-7 setback makes the Cardinals 0-2. Newton scored three runs in the bottom of the second, with Gabe Otto hitting a key double. Four more runs came in the bottom of the fifth inning. Newton starting pitcher Dakota Winkleman gave up a couple of runs in the top of the sixth inning before a new pitcher was brought in. Bondurant-Farrar would score five more runs in the sixth to tie the score. The Bluejays pushed across one run in their last at bat to take the lead, while the Cardinals did not score in the bottom of the seventh. 

The Newton baseball team will look for their first win Tuesday when they travel to Marshalltown.
