
A season for the ages concluded with a wild finish on Championship Saturday for the Newton Cardinals, as they emerged victorious among an elite field of Class 3A athletes to win the team state title.
Newton scored 60 team points, outpacing Pella, Clear Creek-Amana, Gilbert, and Western Dubuque in a championship race that came down to the final event. Newton’s Saturday events included:
100 Meters – Caden Klein, 6th (10.88)
110 Meters – Reilly Trease, 7th (14.8)
200 Meters – Caden Klein, 1st (21.58); Christian Ergenbright, 7th
Sprint Medley Relay – 2nd (N. Thomason, R. Trease, C. Ergenbright, C. Klein)
4×100 Relay – 2nd (N. Thomason, R. Trease, A. Yahia, C. Ergenbright)

On Saturday, the Newton girls had an 8th place finish from Lauren Clarke in the 200 meters, a 7th place performance in the shuttle hurdle relay (C. Klein, M. Lampe, M. Sims, T. White), 8th place in the Sprint Medley Relay (A. Conley, A. Bruce, L. Rivera, L. Clarke), and 20th from Bella Winther in the 800 meters.
