Jasper County Habitat for Humanity has been doing more work to improve existing homes than to build new. Becca Decker is the organization’s Community Partnership Coordinator. She says they hope to start building a new house on one of the three available lots they have in Newton later this year. But she says her volunteers do far more work on making existing homes safe. Last year, Decker received 153 such requests.

“We were able to complete 24 of those homes at over $500,000 worth of work.”

The improvements were made under Habitat for Humanity’s Home Preservation Program. Decker says 19 of the improved homes were in Newton.
