
Newton boys tennis player Ethan Valtman withdrew from the Class 1A State Tennis Tournament at Byrnes Park in Waterloo today. He was just one of sixteen singles players to qualify, but has backed out due to injury. He hurt his wrist in his last match, which was a loss in the 1A District Singles Championship May 14th.
The Newton boys soccer team will try to advance to a regional championship tonight in Indianola. The Cardinals got to this substate match-up with the Indians by edging Winterset in overtime 1-0, on Landon Bozarth’s fourth goal of the season. The win at H.A. Lynn Stadium put Newton’s record at 6-10-2, while Indianola is 10-6-1. The Cardinals already played the Indians in Norwalk April 15th, and lost 7-0. Newton has scored 16 goals this year and given up 48, while Indianola has scored 48 and given up 30. The team that wins tonight’s 7 p.m. game gets to play the winner of the North Polk vs Dennison-Schleswig match up.
The Newton baseball and softball teams will both be playing Marshalltown at home this evening. The boys game starts at 7 p.m. while the girls will begin play at 7:30 p.m.. The Cardinal boys are 0-2 with losses at home last week to Saydel and Bondurant-Farrar, by a combined three runs. The Bobcats are 3-0 with two wins over Des Moines North and a victory against North Tama. Marshalltown scored 45 runs in those three games, and only gave up two.
The Newton and Marshalltown girls game is the season opener for both. The Cardinals will then play a doubleheader Wednesday night at Norwalk, and a single game Thursday night at Knoxville.
