The Newton boys soccer team lost to Indianola 9-0 Tuesday night, ending their season in a Class 3A regional semifinal. Indianola scored seven goals in the first half and two in the second 40 minutes. This was the second time this season the Cardinals played the Indians in Indianola. They were shut out in both games, as they lost 7-0 April 15th. Newton ends the year 6-11-2. The team scored 16 goals and gave up 57 in 19 games. 

The Newton baseball and softball teams picked up wins at Marshalltown Tuesday. The baseball team downed the Bobcats 12- 5. The Cardinals pushed across one run in the first, 4 in the second, 3 each in the third and fourth inning, and one in the bottom of the fifth. Newton had 5 hits, including a home run by Derek Wermager. Wermager had four runs batted in, while Skyler Milheiser stole six bases. The Cardinals also benefited from seven walks and four hit batters. The Newton baseball team is now 1-2.

The Newton softball team opened the season Tuesday with a 1-0 win in Marshalltown. Sophomore Leileigh Hammons pitched a three hit shut out, allowing a first inning Cardinal run to hold up for the victory. Sophomore Brooklynn Britton got the team’s first hit and stole second. She then scored from third, tagging up on a deep fly ball to left field off the bat of Chloe Swank. Newton head coach Kory Leiker said the team looked really sharp from the warm ups to the last pitch, and he was pleased the defense was able to hold the lead on a cold, rainy night.

The Cardinal baseball and softball teams will travel to Norwalk tonight to play doubleheaders. The first baseball game will begin at 5:00 p.m. while the opening softball game starts at 5:30 p.m. The second baseball and softball games can be heard on kniakrls.com with the baseball broadcast on KRLS3, and the softball broadcast on KNIA3. Both pregame shows will begin after the conclusion of game one of the twin bills.
