A Newton man has been given a suspended five year prison term and three years probation for attempting to avoid a driving while license revoked charge and a speeding ticket. According to the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department, 38-year-old Nathan Richard Dunsmoor was driving a Corvette at 112 mph westbound on Interstate 80 west of Newton at around 1 p.m. on September 18th of last year. A deputy initiated a traffic stop, but Dunsmoor didn’t pull over. The criminal complaint says the Newton man got off the interstate five miles west of Newton, and headed east on Highway F-48 West. On the way back towards Newton, the arresting deputy says Dunsmoor passed several vehicles at high speeds in no-passing zones. He was taken into custody after being stopped by a police roadblock at Highway 14, on the west edge of Newton.
Dunsmoor pleaded guilty to eluding at speeds 25 mph above the speed limit, a class D felony. His sentence from District Associate Judge Steven Holwerda includes a $1,025 fine. An additional charge of driving while having a revoked license, a serious misdemeanor, was dismissed.
