A Newton man is facing a felony gun charge after he allegedly admitted to accidentally firing a gun in his apartment. Newton Police say 34-year-old Darius Deshay Washington confessed to having possession of a 20 gauge shotgun when it fired one shot into an occupied next door apartment. No injuries were reported. The incident happened shortly after 7:30 last Friday Night, at an apartment building at 1111 North 11th Avenue East. Just over 24 hours later, Newton officers say Washington claimed the gunshot was an accident, and he turned over the shotgun and the empty shell casing. He was then arrested and charged with Dominion or Control of a Firearm or Offensive Weapon by a Felon, which is a class D felony. Court documents show Washington is free on a $1,000 bond, pending his next court appearance Tuesday, June 3rd.
