
The Newton baseball and softball teams got back in the win column Thursday with convincing victories over Chariton and Knoxville.
The Cardinal boys downed Chariton 11-1 in four and a half innings. They out hit the Chargers 9 to 2. Newton scored three runs in the first inning, five in the second, and three in the third. Cade Bauer had three hits and four runs batted in, while Gabe Otto plated three runs on one hit. Derek Wermager pitched four innings, allowing two hits and one earned run. The Cardinal baseball team is now 2-4.
The Newton Softball team evened their record to 2-2 with an 8-1 win at Knoxville. The Cardinals scored three runs in the first inning, one run in the third, and four runs in the seventh inning. The Panthers got their lone run across the plate in their half of the 5th inning. Mack Sims had three of Newton’s six hits, and two of the team’s five runs batted in. Paige Benson also had two runs batted in for the Cardinals. After the win, Newton Coach Kory Leiker said the team has some things to clean up, but is going in the right direction. He added sophomore Leileigh Hammons did a good pitching. She went all seven innings, allowing six hits and recording six strikeouts.
The Cardinal baseball and softball teams will host Pella Christian tonight. The baseball game will begin at 7:00 p.m. while the softball game starts at 7:30 p.m. The baseball game can be heard on KRLS 92.1 with pregame coverage beginning at 6:45 p.m. The softball broadcast can be heard on kniakrls.com at KRLS3.
