The Norwalk girls golfers shot another school record in their state meet debut on Thursday. The Norwalk boys soccer team, meanwhile, earned a third consecutive state tournament ticket with their 2-0 Substate final win over Bondurant-Farrar.

Girls Golf 4th after Day 1

The Warriors showcased their balance on Day 1 of the Class 4A Girls State Golf Tournament in Iowa City. Norwalk sophomore Evelyn Kinney carded a nine-over-par round of 81 at Pleasant Valley Golf Course. Junior Addie Smith shot an 82 and seniors Ava Garvey and Lydia Krueger added rounds of 83 and 84, respectively. It all added up to a team score of 330, putting the Warriors in fourth place out of 10 teams at the halfway point of the state meet.

Waukee Northwest leads the field by nine strokes after posting a 309, followed by Ames at 318 and Pleasant Valley 320. Norwalk’s 330 broke their 18-hole school record for the fifth time this season. Garvey set the tone early, starting three under through four holes. Additional Norwalk scores included Allie Soukup with an 88 and Mariola Torro Abad’s 97. Head coach Steve Wermerskirchen tells KNIA Sports that the team played well and had a lot of fun.

The final 18 holes of the 4A state tournament will be played today starting at 8:30 a.m.

Boys Soccer advances to State

The Norwalk boys soccer team took care of business on their home field Thursday night, defeating Bondurant-Farrar 2-0 in a Class 3A, Substate final. The third-ranked Warriors improved to 10-7-2 overall. They will now host sixth-ranked Indianola in a 3A State Tournament quarterfinal on Monday at 7:00 p.m. All semifinal and state championship games will be played at Mediacom Stadium in Des Moines next Wednesday and Friday.

Norwalk coach Dustin Kralik tells KNIA Sports that the Warriors played a very good first half against the Bluejays and were able to finish it out in the second half. Tavin Ferner scored both Norwalk goals before halftime, assisted by Matt Lane and Eli Scavo.

Norwalk Girls host Regional Final

The Norwalk girls soccer team will play for a state berth tonight, hosting Bondurant-Farrar in a Class 2A, Region 7 final at 7:00 p.m. The sixth-ranked Warriors are 11-3-3 overall and the 11th-ranked Bluejays are 7-5-5. The two teams played to a 0-0 tie on April 4. The Norwalk girls are seeking their first trip to state since 2022.
