Newton’s four solar-powered outdoor warning sirens that occasionally malfunctioned due to insufficient charging, have all been removed and replaced. Newton City Administrator Matt Muckler says DC-powered rotating sirens with battery backups have been installed in those four locations. Newton has a total of nine outdoor warning sirens to notify people outside of approaching severe weather. Blue Valley Public Safety Incorporated in Grain Valley, Missouri won the contract to replace the solar-powered sirens back in November, with a low bid of $29,982. But Muckler says based on the work needed to complete the four siren project, the final amount for the replacement is only $25,332.
