Claire Smock wrapped up a busy 24 hours with a state medal on Saturday, placing 3rd in the Class 1A singles and doubles tournament in Waterloo. Smock fell to Kate Holton of Waterloo Columbus in the semifinals (2-6, 2-6) before defeating Lauren Gibb of St. Edmond in the 3rd place final (6-1, 6-2). Claire played soccer between the day one and day two rounds, traveling back to Alleman to help the Dutch defeat North Polk 2-0 on Friday night.
Smock’s teammates will rejoin her on Monday in the Class 1A state tennis tournament, held at Pella High School’s courts on the north side of Caldwell Park. The final four teams include Xavier, Kuemper Catholic, and Decorah. Pella is defending the Class 1A state title it won in 2024, and open with the Vikings at 9 a.m. The winning teams will compete later in the day, while the schools that fall will play for a true third place.
