The Summer Reading Program at the Newton Public Library kicks off today. Youth Services Librarian Phyllis Peters says the free program runs through July.

“Last year, we actually had a record breaking summer. There were over one thousand kids, so we are expecting big numbers again this year.”

Peters says most of the summer reading activities are geared towards children 12 and under. A list of the activities are available on the Newton Public Library’s website. Peters says the information was also provided through the Newton School District. A special two hour Summer Reading kick off will be held at the Newton Public Library from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. today and kids can sign up for the program, get free ice cream, and meet the Mo Willems’ book characters Elephant & Piggie.
