Scoring three goals in the final 25 minutes, Norwalk rallied past Indianola 3-1 on Monday night in a Class 3A Boys State Soccer Tournament quarterfinal heard live on 94.3 KNIA.
Trailing 1-0 for much of the game, the third-ranked Warriors controlled the second half from a possession standpoint. Teegan Kralik tied the game on a short range left-footer with 24:47 to go, Eli Scavo broke the tie on a header goal with 10:02 left and Tavin Ferner added an insurance goal with 26 seconds remaining. Scavo and Kralik both added an assist and goalie Jacoby Robbins had three saves.
Indianola couldn’t have asked for a better start to the match in Norwalk. The sixth-ranked Indians took the wind, made a quick steal and fired a shot from distance that set up a corner kick. Moments later, Allan Martinez found the back of the net on a header and Indianola led 1-0 after just 49 seconds.
The Warriors buckled down defensively the rest of the game and eventually increased their scoring opportunities. Norwalk coach Dustin Kralik tells KNIA Sports that it was impressive to slow down Indianola’s dynamic attack and playmakers during the final 79 minutes. Kralik called the victory a very mature performance by his team.
“They didn’t get rattled,” he said. “We started a little shaky, but it was almost like that kind of woke us back up and from then we really settled in and got back into our game. Really proud of the guys for fighting through a little bit of adversity and then finishing the job.”
Indianola, which lost to Norwalk 4-3 during the regular season, finishes the season at 12-7-1. The Indians will lose six seniors that played on back-to-back state qualifiers. Norwalk, now 11-7-2, advances to the 3A state semifinals for the third straight year. The Warriors will face Urbandale Thursday at noon at Mediacom Stadium in Des Moines.
