
The Pella Softball team defeated Newton twice Monday night in Newton, by scores of 11-0 and 11-5. The class 4A #13 Dutch used three home runs and 11 hits to end the first game in four innings by the run-rule. Pella scored nine runs in the first inning, and added one additional run in each of the next two innings for the win. Newton was limited to three hits, all singles. Seven of the Cardinals 15 at bats in game one ended in strikeouts. Senior Emma Eekhoff pitched all four innings for the Dutch and also batted in four runs on a home run and a double.
Game two went the full seven innings. The Dutch scored one run in the top of the first inning, and a home run by Eekhoff helped Pella build a 4-0 lead in the top of the second. Sloan Brodersen batted in Newton’s first run in the bottom of the second inning, and tied the game at five with a hit in the bottom of the third after fellow Cardinal and freshman Makenzly Brant’s hit sent two runners home. Pella then ended the game with five unanswered runs, two in the fifth and three in the seventh. Both teams had ten hits in the second game, but the Dutch benefited from five walks
With the doubleheader win, the Dutch are 3-3 overall and 2-1 in the conference. Pella’s softball team returns to action hosting Boone at 7:15 p.m. tonight while the Cardinals travel to East Marshall for a 7 p.m. game this evening. Newton’s record is now 3-4 overall and 1-4 in the conference.
