The Indianola girls soccer team fell to Waverly-Shell Rock in the quarterfinals of the class 2A state tournament 5-1 as heard live on 94.3 KNIA Tuesday afternoon. The Go Hawks drew ahead early on a corner kick to take a 1-0 lead, then saw leading scorer Anaka Ott score a stellar goal to double the lead in the 26th minute, then just before halftime Ott put a penalty kick into the back of the net to lead 3-0 at the half.
Ott got the hat trick just after halftime in the 53rd minute, with the Go Hawks earning another goal 10 minutes later to lead 5-0, when Indianola did something only one other team has done this season, score a goal against Waverly-Shell Rock when Lauren Burk scored on a free kick from long range after multiple deflections in the box to get to the final tally.
Indianola head coach Mike Wilson said after the game his mind went right to the senior class who left a lasting legacy for the younger athletes on the team.
“They really led the way with the team mentality of what is best for the team rather than what I want. They leave a strong legacy behind them, and for our first year kids, boy, the standard is high.”
