The Indianola City Council met in a work session after their meeting Monday, discussing the City of Indianola Tax Abatement Program. Indianola Mayor Steve Richardson tells KNIA News the city has been working with both residential and commercial developers to bring new properties into the city through Tax Increment Financing, but possible legislation made the council want more information on the program moving forward.
“We need to know what are going to be the disadvantages now because of the caps that are being put on some of the ability for us to collect money. One of the things that didn’t get passed this year but is still on the table in the legislature, is a 2% hard cap on all increases on money we can collect. So if we are giving a 20% tax abatement and we can only collect 2% of the money, it just doesn’t make some sense in some of those cases. So they are going to bring all that information back at a future meeting and we will have some discussion.”
