Hands free driving legislation in the State of Iowa will go into effect on July 1st.
This new legislation, which was passed last session, is an effort to reduce texting and driving on Iowa roads to try and reduce traffic fatalities in our state as 354 people died on Iowa roads in 2024. With the new legislation, drivers will not be allowed to use or hold a phone while driving. However, they will be able to use a phone for voice commands, hands-free calls, and GPS.
From July 1st through the end of 2025, law enforcement will issue warnings for violations, with $100 fines beginning in 2026.
