
The Norwalk softball team swept a varsity doubleheader at Oskaloosa on Friday night while the Warrior and Indian baseball teams split a pair of pitchers duels.
The Class 4A fourth-ranked Norwalk softball dominated their twin bill with wins of 10-0 and 14-0, both in four innings. Game one saw the Warriors break loose for nine runs in the top of the third. Carly Brewer bashed her first two home runs of the season for five RBI. Bailey Birmingham added a solo homer (her fourth) and a double and scored two runs. Nyah Hulbert had a double and two RBI and Hadley Michael singled and drove in a pair. Brewer pitched three innings for the win, allowing only one hit and one walk while striking out four.
In the night cap, the Warriors blew the game open with a seven-run third and totaled 15 hits. Maddie Gullion and Addie Fisher both went 3-for-3 with a double and three RBI, and Gullion also scored three times. Birmingham was 2-for-2 with a double and two runs scored and Michael clubbed her first varsity home run in going 2-for-3 with three RBI. Leah Crick pitched all four innings, allowing four hits and issuing no walks while striking out two.
Norwalk improved to 10-0 overall and 7-0 in Little Hawkeye Conference play. The Warriors will play twice in today’s West Des Moines Valley Tournament at the George Davis Softball Park. They will face Dubuque Senior at 11 a.m. and Fort Dodge at 3:00.
On the baseball diamond, Norwalk dropped game one 3-1 and earned the split with a 2-0, nine-inning victory in game two. Oskaloosa scored all three of their game-one runs in the fourth and held the Warriors to three singles. Xavier Bush singled and scored the lone Warrior run in the third. Cole Wardlow went 1-for-2 and drew a walk. Wardlow pitched very well in defeat, allowing four hits and three earned runs in six innings.
Game two was scoreless until the top of the ninth, when Norwalk was able to push across two runs. Briley Purcell and Eli Benschoter combined on a three-hit shutout. Benschoter got the win in relief, striking out 10 batters in 4 ⅔ hitless innings. At the plate, Colton Moore led the Warriors with two singles, two walks and three stolen bases. Wardlow and Bush both singled and scored a run in the ninth inning and Benschoter had the lone RBI.
The Norwalk baseball team is now 6-6 overall and 5-2 in the Little Hawkeye. Their next game is Monday night at Indianola.
