The Newton softball team split the two games they played Saturday at the Oskaloosa Tournament. The Cardinals lost their first game to Class 3A #6 Mount Vernon 9-1, and defeated Twin Cedars in their second game 12-2 in four innings.

The Cardinals got four hits against Mount Vernon from Makenzly Brant, Brooklynn Britton, Emerson Ray, and Mack Sims. Brant’s hit was a double, as she batted in Newton’s only run in the 6th inning. Mount Vernon scored their nine runs on nine hits. The Mustangs stole two bases and also benefitted from four walks and one hit batter. 

In the win over Twin Cedars, Newton plated their twelve runs on ten hits and three walks. Two Cardinals also reached base on Sabers errors. Sloan Broderson and Chloe Swank both went two for two, with Swank batting in four runs and Broderson two. Leileigh Hammonds also had a run batted in. Newton scored four runs in the first inning, three runs in the second and third innings, and two more in the fourth.

Twin Cedars plated single runs in the first and third innings.

The Cardinal softball team is 5-7 overall and 2-6 in the Little Hawkeye Conference. The team hosts Dallas Center-Grimes Monday at 7:30 p.m. in a game that can be heard live on the KRLS3 Stream, with pre-game coverage at 7:15 p.m.
