A Pella Middle School wrestling coach was honored for her courage during the incident involving a juvenile attacking other students at Pella Middle School last November.
The Des Moines Register reports Brittany Buck won the Courage Award from USA Today as part of the annual Iowa High School Sports Awards. According to Superintendent Greg Ebeling, Buck talked down a former Pella Middle School student that was attacking others with a knife. The USA Today brief mentioned “Girls middle school wrestling coach Brittany Buck’s act of bravery in that moment undoubtedly stopped further injury and saved lives.” The awards were announced earlier this evening.
In an interview with KNIA/KRLS, Buck says she’s grateful for the support, but also feels like she was only doing the right thing as a staff member in the building, and that she did her best to keep everyone else safe.
“The hardest part was the Friday after — we have almost 400 kids in this building, and having them come up and shaking my hand or handing me a note and telling me ‘thank you for saving my life, I was right there.’ I don’t remember what kids were right there, and I just remember doing what I needed to do. That was really hard — because I didn’t feel like a hero, I felt like I was doing my job.”
This past academic year, Buck was named the Iowa Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association Junior High State Coach of the Year.
