The City of Newton is applying for federal funding to help pay for two intersection upgrades and two sidewalk projects. The financial assistance would come from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Safe Streets and Roads for All grant program, which funds improvements that significantly reduce the risk of fatal accidents, or those with serious injuries. Newton City Administrator Matt Muckler says the city hopes to get grants for intersection improvements at First Avenue East and East 12th Street, and Highway 14 and South 12th Avenue West. Grant applications are also being submitted for the construction of sidewalks along East 12th Street North between North 3rd and North 11th Avenue East, and at Iowa Speedway Drive and First Avenue East. If the grants are approved, Muckler says the city’s financial match would amount to approximately $981,000, which would come from road use tax funds and other available federal aid.
