The Knoxville baseball team won their first game against Davis County Monday night as the second game was suspended due to weather in a South Central Conference doubleheader with game two heard live on 95.3 KNIA.

In game one, the Panthers picked up the 5-1 win scoring three runs in the second inning and two in the sixth. Roston McCarty pitched a gem for the Panthers in game one only allowing three hits and one run in the contest which came in the seventh inning while recording eight strikeouts. McCarty also had a two hit game offensively recording a single and triple while five other Panthers had hits in game one with Luke Roozeboom, Grant DeMoss and Lincoln Norris all picking up doubles. Coach Turner DeVore said McCarty put his team in a great position to pick up the win in game one.

“First game Roston threw really well, gave up two hits in the first and didn’t give up another one until the seventh. He pitched really well and we know for the most part he’s going to throw strikes and he’s not going to walk people so as long as we play good defense and score a couple of runs we’re going to have a good chance to win. The bats just did enough, we left some guys on base and needed to do a little more.”

In game two, the Panthers led the Mustangs 3-1 heading into the fifth and then Davis County exploded for four runs to take a 5-3 lead. Knoxville then got runs back in the bottom of the fifth and sixth inning to tie the game up. In the seventh Kyler Gifford came into the game to pitch and struck out the side. Davis County then retired the side in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings and in the top of the eighth the game was suspended due to weather. Brenden Woolsey was the starting pitcher in game two for Knoxville. Woolsey gave up six hits and five runs in the contest. Offensively in game two, Lincoln Norris, Kyler Gifford, and Woolsey all had two hit games.

The Panthers improve to 9-6 on the season with game two expected to resume when the Panthers travel to Davis County on June 26th. The Knoxville baseball team will host Newton tonight at 7:00 pm
