It was a wild eight innings of baseball for the #2 in Class 3A Dutch in a 13-12 win over Dallas Center-Grimes on Monday.

Pella would open the top of the first with an Isaiah Kettler solo home run and added another tally in the top of the 2nd before giving up four runs in the bottom of that frame. Another Dutch home run was hit in the top of the 3rd inning by Hayes Lautenbach, but it came before a deluge of DCG runs, with the home team taking a 10-3 lead after the first nine outs for each school.

The Dutch didn’t roll over, answering with seven consecutive runs — including a six-run top of the 7th to tie festivities at 10 runs each. The Mustangs responded with another run in the bottom of the 6th, putting the pressure on the road team to respond. The Dutch did so, scoring the tying run in the top of the 7th inning with two outs on a DCG error. Pella held serve, and in the top of the 8th, Lautenbach hit his second home run of the night to give the Dutch a two-run lead. DCG put together a rally in the bottom of the 7th against Hayes, who held on despite the winning run getting on base with two outs in that frame.

Game two of the doubleheader has been postponed due to thunderstorms. The Dutch were led by the 2-for-2 performance and three walks by Kettler and the 3-for-4 showing by Lautenbach, who earned the save on the mound in the 8th inning. Pella improves to 15-4 overall and 9-3 in the conference and return to action at home Wednesday against Newton.

Pella’s softball girls were overwhelmed in four innings against #5 in 4A Dallas Center-Grimes, falling 17-0 in their only matchup. They trailed 8-0 in the top of the 4th inning of game two before the weather ended the contest. The Dutch girls drop to 8-8 overall and 6-6 in the league. Pella returns to action this evening at home against Knoxville. Coverage will begin at 5 p.m. on 92.1 KRLS.
