The Newton baseball and softball teams were swept in their season series with Oskaloosa after both squads lost home doubleheaders to the Indians Friday. 

The Cardinal baseball team was on the short end of 6-1 scores in both contests, and the second game was broadcast live on the KRLS3 stream. Newton had one hit and three base runners in the opener, with Skyler Millheiser recording the hit, while Carter Lehrman walked and Derek Wermager was hit by a pitch. The Cardinals’ run was scored on a sacrifice fly by Kreytein Wickliffe in the second inning. Oskaloosa scored two runs in each of the first and fifth innings, and single runs in the third and fourth innings. The Indians benefitted from two Cardinal errors in game one, and had nine hits, two walks, and four stolen bases. In the nightcap, Newton got four hits late in the game, including a run scoring seventh inning single by Dakota Winkleman. Lane Rozendaal and Landry Rausch also had singles, while Millheiser hit a double. Oskaloosa plated two runs in the first, three in the second, and one in the third, and was held scoreless the rest of the game. The Indians had ten hits, four walks, a hit batter, and three stolen bases.

The Cardinals softball team lost to Oskaloosa 7-4 and 8-6. The Indians scored five runs in the first inning of game one, and added single runs in the second and fourth innings. Newton scored three runs in the third and one run in the fifth. Mack Sims went two for four for the Cardinals with a home run and a run batted in. Sloan Broderson and Ava Williams both went two for three, while Brooklynn Britton had the only other run batted in for Newton on a sacrifice. In the second game, the Cardinals scored first with two runs in the first inning, but Oskaloosa took the lead and kept it with three runs in the third inning. Newton plated single runs in the third and seventh innings, while the Indians added four runs in the fourth. Williams was three for four in game two with a run batted in. Sims went two for two, Makenzly Brant was two for four, and Chloe Swank had a hit and three runs batted in.

The Newton baseball and softball teams both fell to 2-13 in the Little Hawkeye Conference, with the baseball team dropping to 4-17 overall and the softball team falling to 4-16. Both squads will host Indianola for single Little Hawkeye Conference games on Monday.
