The Indianola baseball team picked up their 20th win of the year and a series sweep over Newton Monday in a weather shortened 2-1 road victory that was heard live on the KRLS3 Stream.
The game was pushed up to 4 p.m. due to the threat of severe weather, and was stopped in the top of the sixth inning due to lightning, before the game was officially called a final after five innings, when heavy rain moved into the area. Both teams had three hits, and Indianola scored their two runs in the third and fifth innings with the help of three stolen bases, one hit batter, and one Cardinal error. Andrew DeWall batted in the Indians first run with a sacrifice, and reached on a Newton throwing error in the fifth, allowing what turned out to be the winning run to cross the plate. Max Wedmore, Daxton Heimbaugh, and Brody Merema had Indianola’s hits.
Newton left five runners on base in the first two innings, and briefly tied the score at one in the bottom of the fourth without a hit. Landry Rausch led the inning off with a walk and scored on a put out, after the two batters following him were hit by pitches. Skyler Millheiser went two for two with a double, and Lane Rozendahl had a single.
The Indians improved to 12-3 in the Little Hawkeye Conference and 20-4 on the year, and will play doubleheader in Norwalk Wednesday. The Cardinals fall to 2-14 in the conference and 4-18 overall, and travel to Clarke for a non-conference game at 7:30 p.m. tonight.
