Pella Christian announced Wednesday that Joe Steinkamp has been hired as their new head boys basketball coach, and in a corresponding move, Central College announced assistant coach Conor Riordan as the interim head coach of the men’s basketball team.

Steinkamp spent the last 20 years coaching college basketball, including 18 of them at Central. A 2003 Central graduate and former Dutch men’s basketball co-captain, Joe spent 10 years as an assistant coach in the program and later served as head women’s basketball coach from 2017-22. He returned to the men’s program as head coach in 2022 and was named the American Rivers Conference coach of the year in 2023. He’s replacing Brendan Foughty, who resigned from the role of Eagles head boys basketball coach after accepting the position in March.

Riordan, who was a two-time CSC Academic All-American honoree at Simpson College from 2016-2020 and a finalist for the Jostens Trophy as the NCAA Division III player of the year, joined Steinkamp’s staff in 2022. He was a three-time American Rivers all-conference guard, finishing with 1,533 points. A three-year team captain at Ankeny High School, Riordan returned there as sophomore team coach in 2020-21 before becoming a graduate assistant at Midland University (Neb.), where he earned a master’s degree.

During Steinkamp and Riordan’s three years together, the Dutch have posted a 57-28 record, winning Central’s 18th conference title in 2023. This past season, Central captured the American Rivers Conference tournament crown, earning the program’s 12th NCAA Division III tournament berth and finishing with a 17-12 record.
