A Clive company will be addressing long-standing drainage issues that have created safety and accessibility problems on the City of Newton’s hike and bike trails. City Administrator Matt Muckler says mud, gravel, and standing water accumulates on low-lying areas of the trails, putting them in non-compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Modern Concrete Incorporated has been awarded a contract to raise the low sections of the trail and install culvert pipes under them, to ensure proper water flow under the trail surface. Some sections of the hike and bike trail will need to be replaced as well. The City of Newton received seven bids for this project ranging from just under $30,000 to almost $46,000. Modern Concrete’s accepted low bid was $29,924, below the engineer’s estimate of $37,500. The work is to be completed by the end of August, and will be paid for from bond revenue.
