The Melcher-Dallas Summer Squads played two polar opposite games against Seymour on Friday. The baseball Saints jumped out to a big lead only to see the Warriors claw back and tie it but in the end Melcher-Dallas took the win 10-9 in the bottom of the 7th. The Saints held an 8-2 lead after three innings and were cruising offensively, but Seymour plated three runs in the 4th inning and four more in the 6th to get back in it when Evan Schrader walked it off with a bases loaded single to right field, scoring Tucker Branson. Schrader was the key bat in the line up with three RBI in two hits. Reece Chiabotta pitched two innings of relief and shut down Seymour with eight strikeouts. Coach Pat Ferguson tells KNIA Sports this year’s team is different from past Saint squads due to their willingness to come back from adversity.
Ferguson: “This team is a little different this year, they find ways to battle and scratch and this is the first time we’ve been above 500 this late in the season in a long time.”
The softball Saints did not have nearly as good of an experience with Seymour and the Warriors erupted for eight runs in the 3rd inning enroute to an 11-1 victory to send fans home after the 5th inning due to the run rule. Melcher-Dallas was limited to just two hits, one each by Hayden Branson and Emma Ripperger. The softball squad will host the Coal Miners Classic today while baseball will travel to Moravia today for a make up game.
