Two Newton men are accused of stealing a cardboard compactor component from a dumpster behind the Newton Walgreens store. According to Newton Police, a camera placed in the dumpster area caught 42-year-old Nathan Michael Beintema and 25-year-old Darren Joseph Versendaal breaking off the compactor component from the dumpster shortly before 2 a.m. on June 19th. The police report notes the two men also had to use a grinder to cut a thick chain, and break slats on a fence to get access to the dumpster. The replacement cost for the compactor and damage to the fence and chain are estimated at just over $4,200. Beintema and Versendaal are both charged with 2nd degree criminal mischief, a class D felony. Beintema faces an additional class D felony charge of possession of contraband in a correctional institution. Jasper County Jail Staff allegedly found a substance that tested positive for methamphetamine in his pants pocket while he was being booked into the jail. Beintema and Versendaal both have court appearances scheduled for Monday.
