Newton residents who enjoy shooting off their own fireworks will have more time to do that this 4th of July. Newton Mayor Evelyn George notes a new state law sets a uniform use time for fireworks, and eliminates the use restrictions many communities had in place.
“In Newton, we have allowed fireworks in the city limits from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. on July 4th. This past legislative session, state legislators decided everyone in the state should be able to shoot fireworks on July 3rd and 4th, and on December 31st to celebrate the new year. We do hope that people are respectful of their neighbors and property.”
The new state law allows firework use from 9 a.m. until 11 p.m. on July 3rd and 4th. The Newton Fire Department notes there are still some city restrictions that apply to discharging fireworks within the city limits.
- Fireworks can not exceed one inch in diameter or 250 grams of powder
- Sky lanterns are prohibited unless securely tethered
- Fireworks can only be used on property you own or where you have permission
- Anyone under 18 may only discharge fireworks with direct parental supervision
- No fireworks may be discharged while intoxicated or under the influence
- You are responsible for any fireworks set off by you, your family, or on your property
A violation of these rules can result in a civil penalty of up to $400. The City of Newton’s 4th of July Fireworks show will take place at dusk Friday night at Agnes Patterson Park.
