The Norwalk summer sports teams finished a combined 1-2 on Tuesday. The Warrior baseball team split a doubleheader at Des Moines Roosevelt and the softball team lost in extra innings at Winterset.

Baseball splits twin bill

Norwalk lost 4-0 in game one of a doubleheader at Roosevelt, then won the night cap 14-4. The Warriors were shut out on five hits and committed seven errors in the first game. Cole Wardlow led the offense, going 2-for-4 with a double, and Rhylee Schmidt also doubled. Wardlow took the loss on the mound, allowing four unearned runs in three innings.

Norwalk trailed 1-0 after three innings of game two, but scored four runs in the fourth and eight in the fifth to take control, totaling 16 hits. Wardlow had another big game at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two stolen bases and three RBI. Brady Wilkening was 3-for-4 with two runs scored while Schmidt and Eli Benschoter both went 2-for-5 and combined to drive in three. Konner Holtorf and Xavier Bush both added a double. Benschoter earned the win, striking out six batters and allowing only one earned run in 4 ⅓ innings.

The Warriors are now 12-14 overall. They will travel to Ballard for another doubleheader on Thursday at noon.

Softball loses in 9

The Class 4A third-ranked Norwalk softball team lost a nine-inning contest at 4A No. 11 Winterset, falling 6-5 in a game featuring 29 total hits. The Huskies took a 4-1 lead with four runs in the second inning. The Warriors tied it with a three-run fourth and scored again in the sixth to make it 5-5.

Norwalk finished with 13 hits, including 12 singles, and did not strike out. Bailey Birmingham went 3-for-3 with a double and a walk. Nyah Hulbert, Maddie Gullion, Hadley Michael and Cambry Livingston added two hits each.

Winterset tallied 16 hits and took advantage of three Warrior errors. Leah Crick, Lillian Garvey and Carly Brewer split the pitching duties for Norwalk. Brewer took the loss, allowing four hits, three walks and the game-winning run in 2 ⅔ innings.

The Warriors will take a 27-4 overall record into tonight’s home game against Ames.
