The Pella Christian softball team dominated North Mahaska in 10-1 six inning win heard live on 92.1 KRLS Tuesday night, while the Eagles baseball team outlasted Grand View Christian 10-9.
Kicking off the final week of the regular season, the Pella Christian softball team fell behind 1-0 on a solo homer in the top of the second inning, but bounced back to control the game the rest of the way. The Eagles captured the lead with a four-run bottom of the third inning, before tacking on two more runs in the fifth to take a 6-1 lead. After a 1-2-3 top of the sixth, Pella Christian then secured the win with another four-run frame in the bottom of the sixth to improve to 9-15 overall on the summer. Laurel Roozeboom had a big night for the Eagles, going 2-4 at the plate with four RBIs and a double, and also tossed a career-high six strikeouts while allowing just three baserunners in a complete game in the circle. As a team, Pella Christian pounded out 15 hits, with Rachel Kacmarynski, Faith Kacmarynski, and Chloe Snyder leading the way with three hits a piece. Brynn Roozeboom added two hits in the victory, and said that while postseason play is just around the corner, they are focusing on competing each pitch.
“We’re not looking ahead, we’re just taking it one game at a time. And I know that if we focus on each game and take it one pitch at a time, we can do this. We just need to focus on the game at hand, and it doesn’t even matter who is in the other dugout. If we play Pella Christian softball I know good things will happen.”
On the baseball diamond, the Eagles controlled the game early against Grand View Christian, but needed late-game heroics to earn the win. After the Thunder scored one run in the top of the first, Pella Christian plated nine straight runs in the first through third innings to take a 9-1 lead. Grand View Christian battled back to plate seven consecutive runs in the fourth and fifth innings to pull within 9-8, then plated a run in the sixth to tie the game at 9-9. In the bottom of the sixth, Logan Gallaher was hit by a pitch, advanced to third on an errant pickoff attempt, and scored the game-winning run for the Eagles on a wild pitch. Brecken Ritzert led the way offensively for Pella Christian, going 3-5 with three runs scored. Logan Gallaher recorded the win in two innings of relief, giving up just one unearned run on one hit and two walks. Ben Van Wyngarden added two hits and three RBIs on the night, pushing the Eagles record to 8-20 overall on the year.
