The Newton softball team traveled to State Center Wednesday and lost to West Marshall 3-2 in walk-off fashion. 

The Cardinals got the first run of the game in the first inning, and held a 1-0 lead until the Trojans got two runs in their half of the fourth inning. Newton tied the score at two in the top of the seventh inning, only to see West Marshall get the win with a run in the bottom half of the inning with two outs. Cardinals’ lead-off batter Mack Sims scored both of Newton’s runs as she went 2-3 with a double and a solo homer. Chloe Swank also had a multi-hit game for Newton, going 3-4 with a run batted in. The Cardinals had a total of seven hits, three walks, one hit batter, and one stolen base. Leileigh Hammons suffered the loss after pitching 6.2 innings and giving up six hits, two earned runs, and striking out three.  

The Newton Softball team fell to 8-18 overall on the season, and are back in non-conference road action tonight at 7 p.m. in Le Grand against Class 2A #15 East Marshall.
