The Indianola baseball team swept Carlisle in a non-conference doubleheader Thursday evening winning 2-0 and 5-2 heard live on 94.3 KNIA, while the softball team split at the Mustangs Invitational falling to Ankeny Centennial 12-0 and shutting out Urbandale 7-0.
The Indianola softball team never got the offense going against the Jaguars in the opener, but scored a run in the first, then three more in the second, another two in the fourth, and one more in the fifth to earn the victory over the J-Hawks. Indianola is now 19-13 on the season, and will next play Tuesday hosting Des Moines East.
Bryant Ritchie pitched six shutout innings in the first game against the Wildcats as the offense pushed across a run in the fourth and then another in the fifth on a wild pitch, with Asher Brueck coming in for the save to win game one. Game two saw the Wildcats get hits with four of the first five batters and took a 2-0 lead off of pitcher Tate Atkin, but Asher Brueck tied the game on a two-RBI triple in the bottom of the inning to make it 2-2 after the first. Atkin then settled down and only allowed one hit the rest of the way as the Indians scored a run on a wild pitch in the fourth, then added two in the fifth with RBI’s from George Blake and Dax Heimbaugh to lead 5-2.
Atkin said after the game the pitching staff has been comfortable over the last several weeks because the defense has been playing so well behind them, and the trust that has built up over the course of the season has made them very confident going into the end of the season.
Blake went 3-3 at the plate driving in a run, while Zach Benge was 2-3.
The Indians are now 26-5 on the season, and will host Des Moines Lincoln on Monday.
