Despite multiple efforts to begin the Class 2A Substate 6 tournament Saturday, the Pella Christian and Grand View Christian baseball teams were rained out and will try again on Monday.

The Thunder were originally scheduled to host a postseason twinbill Saturday at James W. Cownie Baseball Park, with PCM and East Marshall playing at 5 pm, and the Eagles and Grand View following at 7 pm. Anticipating a rainy forecast, the call was made to move the doubleheader up to 11 am and 1 pm Saturday, but the fields were unable to handle all of the rainfall. As a result, the doubleheader was moved to Monday, with the games reverting back to the original start times of 5 and 7 pm.

This will be the second time Pella Christian and the Thunder have met in the last six days, with the Eagles hanging on for a 10-9 win on Eagle Lane last Tuesday. The victory evened the series on the baseball diamond between Pella Christian and Grand View Christian, with the Thunder winning the only other meeting in the Bound era last season 11-0. Eagles head coach Chris Fynaardt says that two of the keys to Monday’s matchup will be pitching and defense.

“Our pitchers just need to attack early in the count. Get that leadoff hitter out, or at least not walk him, and that will go a long way in limiting how many runs they’ll score. I think once they get on base they are a pretty aggressive team. Their top two hitters in the lineup steal quite a few bases, so it will be important to get those guys out and kind of control the rest of that lineup.”

Coverage of Pella Christian’s first postseason contest against Grand View Christian at James W. Cownie Baseball Park Monday can still be heard live on 92.1 KRLS at 6:45 pm. With baseball being pushed back to Monday, coverage of the Eagles softball team’s first round postseason contest at home against New London on Monday will now be broadcast live on the KRLS2 stream also at 6:45 pm.
