Nyah Hulbert and Carly Brewer supplied the power as Norwalk used another fast start to defeat Johnston 9-1 in non-conference softball action Monday night. The game was heard live on 94.3 KNIA and the KNIA3 stream, ending by the run rule in the bottom of the sixth.

The Class 4A third-ranked Warriors won their fourth straight game and have scored a combined 13 runs in the first inning of those contests. Monday’s four-run first began with a long solo home run by Hulbert and also included Ava Garvey’s two-out RBI single and a two-run single by Cambry Livingston.

Hulbert led off the second inning with another solo blast, her 17th of the season. Two batters later, Brewer slugged her 14th homer to make it 6-0 and chase Dragons’ starting pitcher Jensyn Tenpas. The Warriors added two runs in the third on back-to-back RBI doubles by Bailey Birmingham and Brewer and scored their final run in the sixth.

Hulbert, Birmingham and Brewer combined for six hits, five runs scored and five RBI at the top of the lineup. Brewer also pitched six innings for the win, improving to 19-5 and defeating Johnston for the second time in five days. She allowed six hits and struck out four. Norwalk outscored the Class 5A fifth-ranked Dragons 17-2 in two matchups.

The Warriors will wrap up regular season play on Wednesday with a doubleheader at 5A top-ranked Waukee Northwest. First pitch is set for 5:00 p.m.
