After picking up a run-rule win in their postseason opener Monday night, the Pella Christian softball team travels to Wilton tonight for a Class 2A Region 2 quarterfinal matchup.
The Eagles cruised to their third straight win with an 11-0 victory over New London on Monday to set up tonight’s matchup, while the Beavers earned a first round bye. Pella Christian, who enters the game with an 11-16 overall record, comes into the contest with seven players batting over .300 this summer, led by Chloe Snyder with a .467 batting average. The 12-11 Wilton softball squad finished the regular season in third place in the River Valley – South Conference, and went 2-3 in their last five games. The Beavers started the stretch with a pair of eight run losses to Class 2A #11 Cascade and Class 3A #15 Center Point-Urbana, before sweeping a doubleheader against West Branch and falling to Class 1A #5 Durant.
The Beavers enter tonight’s matchup with four players batting over .300 on the season, with Emersyn Guyer leading the offense with a .413 batting average. The Eagles and Wilton have just one prior meeting in the Bound era, squaring off in the quarterfinals of the 2021 State Tournament, where Wilton used three two-run innings to secure a 7-2 victory. Snyder says that while each postseason game adds a little bit of tension, they are focused on the task at hand and ready to face any adversity they may encounter.
“I do believe there is a little more pressure that gets added on, but we can all handle it. In these games we all know that it could end in the blink of an eye so we don’t take it for granted and we just keep on showing up to play.”
